I entertain at a lot of weddings every year. Strolling magic is a perfect fit for the way that weddings are run. Magic definitely can make a real difference to, and a genuine impact on, the way wedding guests feel about the day. Magic at weddings has become very popular and enquiries are definitely on the increase. I think this is partly due to the fact that there have been a number of magicians working weddings for a few years now and people are getting used to seeing them there and the extra entertainment that they provide. Magic is certainly cool again in the view of the general public, and TV magic programmes have one more caught the attention of the man in the street, which means people are more amenable to having some at events such as weddings.
Strolling close-up magic fits in like a dream to the way weddings are generally organised. There are essentially three times during a wedding celebration when it gets used, and these are:

  • During the pre-meal drinks reception, a time when usually the photographs are still being taken and the guests can often be standing around for long periods.
  • In between the courses of the wedding breakfast meal.
  • After the end of the meal and in the period leading up to any dance or further entertainment later in the evening.

I like doing the reception as this creates the rapport between the guests. Increasingly bookers are looking to try and fill every possible ‘down time’ with some form of ‘up time’, and so the period pre-meal while the photographs are being arranged I have found to be increasingly popular.

Wedding close-up magic has a great impact on your spectators. The reactions my good close-up gets and the length of time some spectators remember it, shows how important the magic can be for making any event memorable. With weddings it is all about making the day special. The bride (in particular) and groom will be hoping that their day will be perfect in every way, and will be a day not only they will remember for the rest of their lives but that their guests will think back on fondly too. My job is to help that process – no pressure there then! I see it as part of my job to show the bride and groom something special. Whatever time of day I’m booked, I keep an eye out for what they are doing; there’s always space to show at least one special exclusive themed performance piece. Once I have their attention, they often want to see more! I’ll make sure to see them and say hello when I arrive and tell them I’ll be with them shortly. Their time is very precious and they really want their guests to have a great time. It is important not only to entertain the bride and groom but for them to be aware that their guests are also being well entertained.
